Dancing Sunflower

2023  ·  Kinetic Sculpture

Polycarbonate sheets, SS rivets and rings, digitally designed transparent stickers.

Each face is stippled with a phyllotaxis spiral — the same arrangement a sunflower head follows, every dot set 137.5° from the one before it, the golden angle. It is the pattern nature reaches for again and again, packing seeds as densely and evenly as space allows. As the transparent layers turn against one another, the dots beat into a living moiré: spirals winding out of the centre, blooming and dissolving as the structure breathes. Caught at the edge of sight it comes to resemble the sun itself — fitting, since the sun pours its energy outward by these very same ratios.

The second film shows an RGB sunflower — the same phyllotaxis split into red, green, and blue, so the moiré blooms in shifting colour as it turns.
